May, not November
The IB examines in May and in November. The UAE sits in Exam Zone A and its schools take the May session, which is the larger of the two worldwide. November exists for schools on a southern hemisphere calendar and for candidates who could not sit in May. It is still worth knowing, because a retake is normally that November session and the decision arrives in July.

You never enter your own child
A student is registered by the school's Diploma Programme coordinator, not by the family, and the deadlines are the school's own rather than a date the IB publishes for parents. If a level is going to change, Higher to Standard or the other way, it has to change before that internal deadline. That is usually months before anyone at home has begun thinking about it.

The predicted grade is what a university sees first
Applications go out long before the exams, carrying a grade the school predicts. That prediction is built from work already done, which means the term before the application is doing far more than anybody says out loud. A subject drifting in the first year of the Diploma can cost an offer before the exam it is drifting towards even exists.

A retake is a November decision made in July
Results arrive in early July. A November retake means five more months on one subject while the rest of the year group has already gone, and universities differ on whether an offer will be held open for it. The alternative is to take the result as it stands. That choice is much easier when somebody has read the actual papers with you rather than only the total.

The bilingual diploma is a notation, not extra points
It is awarded when a candidate takes two languages from the studies in language and literature group and scores 3 or above in both, or takes a group 3 or group 4 subject in a language other than their group 1 language. It appears on the certificate. It carries no extra points and no extra tariff, though several continental European universities read it as a real signal. Worth choosing on purpose rather than arriving at by accident.
