What changed when AP went digital

    Most AP exams are no longer on paper

    Twenty-eight of the thirty-six AP exams are now taken in the College Board's Bluebook app. Sixteen are fully digital: the questions are read and the answers typed on the laptop. Twelve are hybrid, where the multiple choice is answered on screen and the free response is hand-written in a paper booklet the school hands out.

    Almost everything we teach is in the hybrid twelve

    AP Calculus AB and BC, Physics 1, Physics 2 and both Physics C papers, Chemistry, Biology, Statistics, Precalculus, Macroeconomics and Microeconomics are all hybrid. So for nearly every subject we teach, a student reads the question off a screen and writes the working by hand on paper. That is a different motor habit from a full paper exam, and it is worth practising rather than meeting for the first time in May.

    The score and the grade are read separately

    Exams are scored 1 to 5 and results arrive in July, months after the school has already put a course grade on the transcript. Most universities grant credit from a 3, and the more selective ones ask for a 4 or a 5. The two numbers move independently, which is why work that only chases the class grade leaves the exam score where it was.
