Search "tutor near me" in Dubai and you'll find hundreds of options at wildly different prices, from AED 80 an hour to AED 400. Most parents compare on price and availability because those are the visible variables. After mentoring hundreds of students, we'd argue the variable that decides results is invisible on every listing: whether the person is a tutor or a mentor.
A tutor teaches the subject. A mentor teaches the student.
A traditional tutor delivers content: here is the method, here is the homework, see you next week. That works for a student who is motivated, organised and simply missing knowledge. It quietly fails the much larger group of students whose real blockers are confidence, study habits, exam anxiety or the simple belief that they're "just bad at maths".
A mentor handles both layers. Because our mentors are top university students who sat IGCSE, IB or SABIS exams just a few years ago, the student sees living proof that the mountain is climbable, and hears the route described by someone who recently climbed it.
Why age proximity changes everything
There's a moment in nearly every first lesson where the student admits something they've never told a teacher: "I actually don't understand what a mole is" or "I memorise without understanding". They say it because the person across from them feels like a slightly older sibling rather than an authority figure. That admission is where real progress starts, and it almost never happens with a 50-year-old stranger.
Question to ask anyone you're about to hire
Ask when they last took or taught this exact syllabus. Exam boards change specifications every few years; revision advice from a decade ago can be actively wrong. Ask how they'll report progress to you, because "trust me" is not a reporting system; our mentors send a progress note after every single lesson. And ask what happens if the fit isn't right; the honest answer should be a free rematch, not a contract clause.
The price-per-hour trap
An AED 100/hour tutor who needs 30 hours to move a grade costs more than an AED 180/hour mentor who does it in 12, and that's before counting the months lost. Compare cost per result, never cost per hour.
