A-Level tutoring

Two years, three subjects, one offer. Dubai sixth forms do not all run them the same way.

AS and A Level across Cambridge International, Pearson Edexcel and OxfordAQA. Your mentor sat the same papers a few years ago and won a university place on the strength of them. Dubai's British sixth forms do not all share one exam board, and a few of the best known schools here stop offering A-Level after Year 11. So the first thing we check is what your child has actually been entered for.

    The board printed on the paper decides the revision

    DESS College publishes Edexcel, AQA, OCR and Cambridge across the college. GEMS Wellington Academy Silicon Oasis shows Cambridge, Edexcel and AQA on its post-16 pages. Two students in the same Dubai year group can sit different specifications in the same subject. So we match the mentor to the specification first, and only then open a past paper.

    Not every British school here finishes on A-Level

    Sixth formers at JESS Arabian Ranches take the IB Diploma or a BTEC pathway, and GEMS Wellington International School in Al Sufouh is an IB school after Year 11. If a family arrives expecting A-Level and the school actually teaches the Diploma, we say so on the first call. Then we point them at the right page, rather than sell the wrong lessons.

    Ours came through AS and A Level in the last few years, and straight into the season behind it. Predicted grades in the autumn, the personal statement, then results day in August with a firm and an insurance place hanging on two or three letters. They remember which topics quietly cost them marks, because it was recent.

    Where mentors drive, and when they stop driving

    Homes in Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim, Al Barsha, Emirates Hills, Arabian Ranches, Dubai Hills, Motor City, Downtown, Business Bay, Dubai Marina, Jumeirah Village Circle and Mirdif. In this city the problem is rarely the distance, it is the hour. A 4:30 pm start from Mirdif to Emirates Hills and a 6:30 pm start are two different journeys, so we match on the side of town as well as on the subject. In the weeks before a series, when nobody wants to lose an hour to Sheikh Zayed Road, the same mentor moves online and the slot stays exactly where it was.

    Where our A-Level students go to school

    Dubai College, Jumeirah College in Al Safa, and DESS College out in Academic City. Also Dubai British School Emirates Hills, Kings' School Al Barsha, Repton Dubai, and the GEMS Wellington academies at Silicon Oasis and Dubai Hills. Dubai private schools follow the academic calendar approved by the UAE government, and the Knowledge and Human Development Authority publishes each school's own dates on its school profile. That is unusually helpful: mock weeks, term ends and the summer date are all knowable in advance, so the plan is built from your school's calendar rather than a generic one.

    What does an A-Level tutor cost in Dubai?

    AED 180 an hour on the Commitment rate and AED 200 on Flexible, both at high-school level. Every price includes 5% VAT. A mentor coming to your home in Dubai adds AED 40 to the online rate. The full table by school level is on the pricing page.

    Which exam boards do Dubai sixth forms use?

    All three that we teach, and often more than one inside a single school. DESS College lists Edexcel, AQA, OCR and Cambridge across the college, and GEMS Wellington Academy Silicon Oasis shows Cambridge, Edexcel and AQA at post-16. Ask your school for the specification code against each subject and send it to us. Revising on the wrong board's papers is revision thrown away.

    When can my child sit the papers, and where?

    Cambridge International runs May and June and again in October and November. Pearson Edexcel International A-Level runs in January, in May and June, and in October. OxfordAQA runs in January, in May and June, and in November. Students entered by their own school sit in that school. Registration in the UAE goes through the British Council, which lists the Dubai schools running its exams, among them Dubai Carmel School, Dubai Scholars Private School and Horizon International School. Its Dubai office is on Tariq Bin Ziyad Street, behind Dubai TV.

    My child's school is not on your list.

    Then tell us the name. The schools above are simply where our current Dubai students happen to be, not a limit. It cuts the other way too. JESS Arabian Ranches and GEMS Wellington International School run the IB Diploma rather than A-Level after Year 11. If that is your school, the IB, Dubai page is the one you want.

    At home or online?

    Both, and most Dubai families end up mixing them. One lesson at the kitchen table each week through the term. Then extra online hours in the run-up to the series, when an evening drive across town costs more than the hour is worth.
