Registration in the UAE goes through the British Council, whose Abu Dhabi office is Villa 16 on Al Qasbah Street in Al Bateen, next to the Bateen healthcare centre. Candidates entered by their own school sit in that school. The venue is confirmed when the entry is made, so read the timetable you are given rather than assuming it is the same hall as last year.

Can you plan lessons around my child's mock weeks?

Yes, and in the capital that takes one extra step. ADEK requires every private school to submit its calendar for approval and to keep a common structure, but it does not publish one master calendar for parents the way Dubai's KHDA does. So term dates and mock weeks have to come from your school rather than a public page. Send us the calendar the school gave you and the plan is built backwards from it.

Brighton College Abu Dhabi's exam board fee list runs subject by subject: Biology with Pearson, Accounting with Cambridge, Drama with AQA. The British School Al Khubairat's fee list does the same. Repton Abu Dhabi prints an exam board line under every course in its sixth form options booklet, mostly Pearson Edexcel with OxfordAQA on a handful. We read those documents, then teach the specification the school actually entered your child for.

What the regulator here means for a family buying lessons
Private schools in the emirate answer to the Department of Education and Knowledge, which inspects them through its Irtiqaa programme and rates them Outstanding, Very Good, Good, Acceptable, Weak or Very Weak, with Good as the minimum it expects. ADEK's Professional Code of Ethics also tells school staff they need a private teacher work permit from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation before tutoring outside school hours. It also stops a teacher tutoring a student enrolled at the school that employs them. Worth knowing before anyone arranges quiet lessons with a member of the staffroom.

The islands, and the crossings between them

Mentors come to homes on Saadiyat, Al Reem and Yas, and in Al Raha, Khalifa City, Al Bateen, Al Mushrif, Al Nahyan, Mussafah and Mohammed Bin Zayed City. The capital is a set of islands joined by a handful of bridges. The honest question is never how many kilometres away a mentor lives, it is which crossing sits between the two of you. Someone already on Reem for a 5:00 pm lesson can reach Khalifa City for 7:00 pm. Someone coming off Saadiyat the other way cannot always promise the same, and we say which before you book rather than after. Through exam season the same mentor teaches online instead of spending the hour on a bridge.

The sixth forms our students come from

Brighton College Abu Dhabi in Bloom Gardens, The British School Al Khubairat off Airport Road, and Cranleigh Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat. Then the Fry campus of Repton Abu Dhabi on Al Reem, Nord Anglia International School on Al Reem, and Yasmina British Academy out by Al Raha Gardens. Further from the centre there are A-Level sixth forms at GEMS Cambridge International School - Abu Dhabi, Reach British School in Baniyas and Diyafah International School in Mohammed Bin Zayed City. Not every British school in the capital ends that way: Bateen World Academy, The British International School Abu Dhabi and Aspen Heights all finish on the IB Diploma instead.
